Twelve days after my mom died, my son was born. I'll never know if my mom let go after I gave her "permission" to, but it's something that I think about often.

What Losing Your Mother Feels Like

Losing a mother is like being on a ship that has lost it's ballast and is now at the mercy of the deepest ocean and all it holds within. I bob around without a foundation to bring me back to the same balanced spot each time, a spot I just can't get right.

When I'm shopping and I see something she might like, I think about how much she loved chocolate and the color turquoise. And how strange it is to know that I won't be buying her anything anymore.

Children never wonder why there is food on the table, or why they have coats and boots to keep their feet dry in the winter. We think a house with heat comes by magic. It isn't until adulthood, when we're parents ourselves in a dual-income family with half the children that my mother had, that we wonder in disbelief, how did she do it all and alone?
