We live with these voices and expectations all the time, but often feel like we're the only ones who hear them and feel them. It's a relief to bring them out into the light and air and see that we're not the only ones.
Are glad you are not quite as overweight as the person next to you in the Starbucks line? Do you wish you were as skinny as the model on the latest issue of your favorite fashion magazine? If it is, it's time to stop, take a break, and focus on what's really going on with your own body.
If you ask me, the whole point in putting it all out there isn't really about "opening the kimono" but rather about connecting with ourselves in a way that releases the hold that other people's opinions have on us.
Remember, what you practice, you get better at. When you chose to practice self-acceptance, compassion, and kindness toward yourself and others, you'll cultivate peace, courage, and joy. That's a habit worth getting good at!
It doesn't get any more grown-up than 40. But I found that, with this realization, my shoulders noticeably dropped. I don't have to try so hard to be in the know. There's a freedom in becoming a bit of an old fart.
Now let's get into your head. If you are evaluating your entire self based on a few body parts, you are doing a huge disservice to the spectrum of services your body provides. Do you even KNOW what your pancreas has done for you lately?
Start treating yourself and your body temple with respect and love, no matter how huge you feel. Go for the gold, the job, the guy. Be bold, be courageous! Let weight loss be a natural and effortless consequence of feeling good, having fun, and being excited about life.
