The days of labor have passed. Labor Day for all of those in the working and lower middle class who toil in blue collar and white collar jobs and make so little in wages that they qualify for food stamps and public aid.
So why does the white, lower middle class, population continue to favor the Republicans despite the fact that the economic promises of the party have been shown to be bogus? Partly it is a cultural phenomenon.
Because of the strong overlap between American values and middle class values, being middle class is often assumed to be the socio-economic state of nature by American. The history of the American middle class, however, is quite different.
