When I heard recently about the rescue of Timbuktu by the French from the Ansar Dine, it somehow made me think of the time when France conquered this city in 1893.

Here's an irony. The NATO air campaign that helped overthrow Gaddafi, and that French President Nicolas Sarkozy couldn't wait to launch, has presented Sarkozy's successor, Francois Hollande, with a big problem in Mali. It has also placed France in what could prove a dicey predicament.
