Throughout February, in communities across the country, millions of supporters have been coming together, wearing red, and reinforcing the critical message that we can overcome heart disease and stroke.
Unfortunately, the FDA putting food last is only one part of our broken food safety system. There is also a fundamental failure of coordination and responsibility for food regulation at the federal level.
Some members of Congress are trying to reign in this shadow drug industry, compounding pharmacies, by giving the FDA the authority to regulate these firms. But the industry is fighting back, using its political clout to resist federal standards.
Any time an administration finds science politically inconvenient, this precedent by a supposedly pro-science president will make it that much easier for future administrations to assert more absolute authority. That is dangerous for the future of science and the nation.
