What happened at Mid Staffordshire Hospital was almost the perfect storm. Combine an absence of leadership and an over-focus on cost-cutting, and to that add discouraged staff, and you have all the ingredients for disaster.
Although two of the greatest attributes of our country might be our competitive spirit and our defense of our values and freedoms, one can't help but wonder at what price. Brains are the tie that binds us, but are we really coming undone? Think about it.
Our experience showed that "doing the right thing" -- appropriate care -- and "doing the right thing right" --- safe and effective care - can become the norm at rural, suburban and big urban teaching hospitals alike.
The old phrase, "Biology is destiny," will have to be seriously re-examined. A good replacement would be "Consciousness is destiny," which is the guiding reason that meditation arose in the first place.
