With all the angst about the economy, the deficit, and a looming government shut-down, I'm still concerned that we're treating symptoms rather than diagnosing the underlying disease.
Can you imagine Donald Trump going to Iowa like Newt Gingrich, to assure the social conservatives that his action-packed marital history is irrelevant now that he's found God? Nah.
There are only two real possibilities to make a race against Obama competitive: Mitt Romney and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.
While we Jews may have been dissed by the fashion designer, we got props from the Pope, who shared the breaking news that Jews are not, contrary to popular belief, responsible for the death of Jesus.
So here we are in 2011, and we are making fun of unwed mothers. Why are we such a puritanical country? This is not an important thing.
This week saw the ongoing implosion of a once-likable figure who gave a crazy interview, refused to apologize, and made it worse the more he kept talking. I'm referring, of course, to Mike Huckabee (sorry, Charlie) -- who, in an interview with a birther radio host, repeatedly claimed that Obama's worldview, particularly "his view of the Brits," was shaped by "having grown up in Kenya." When it was pointed out that Obama never even visited Kenya until 1987, Huckabee claimed he'd misspoken and meant to say Indonesia -- even though it was a Dutch, not a British, colony. This pandering to the worst elements of the Obama-hating fringe is especially disappointing because Huckabee has previously dared to speak eloquently against immigrant bashing and in favor of poverty fighting. Now he'd rather channel his inner Dan Quayle and criticize unwed-but-pregnant Natalie Portman. Maybe he misspoke and meant to slam Bristol Palin.
Perhaps Mr. Huckabee should have thought twice before choosing this particular moment to attack a Hollywood hero who stood up to evil.
Palin, Bachmann and Huckabee unflaggingly demonstrate wholesale ignorance of American history and world affairs. Is there no political price to pay for incompetence?
Politicians lose favor for many reasons. Sometimes it's a buildup of things so overwhelming that even the under-informed get it: Sarah Palin's increas...
Mike Huckabee is obviously running for president. He would like to get into the news by attacking Natalie Portman. Why? Because she is engaged and pregnant and not married yet.
One has to ask, since Mike Huckabee has now tried to slut-shame Natalie Portman as a privileged unwed mother with money and childcare at her disposal whether he will now risk the wrath of Palin, Inc.?
"Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here." Given the level of wackiness that seems to have afflicted this third planet from the sun, Jack Nicholson's immortal line in the movie As Good as It Gets should become our worldwide slogan.
When Mike was ten, Rock Hudson famously married Gomer. The two men raised young Mike as their son until he went off to apprentice with Floyd the barber, another Mayberry icon.
