The primary mission of this so-called "religious freedom" coalition is to protect the "right" of anti-gay Christians in the military to continue to discriminate against and harass LGB service members in a post-DADT and post-DOMA military.
The military today continues to fail to provide benefits to same-sex couples who may be legally married in any of several states. Perhaps it is radical for me to believe that the federal government should not reduce the rights of a certain demographic in this way.
Operating in denial is never a great way to resolve a problem. Asking those who choose to put their lives at risk for serving their country to go one step further by asking them to also lie about who they are is simply wrong.
Robert Gates and Michael Mullen correctly criticized Lt. General Benjamin Mixon for writing to Stars and Stripes expressing his opposition to repealing DADT. However, they have only themselves to blame for Mixon's insubordination.
