What Romney Doesn't Understand

Romney divided the country into two groups: the workers who produce, and the "moochers" who benefit. If this sounds like a half-baked version of an Ayn Rand novel, you're right. That's the contemporary Republican Party for you.

Politicians' abhorrence to discussing the poor in any real sense reflects the Faustian bargain made with the electorate. This holds true even for those who may haven fallen into poverty's grip.

Mitt Romney says he's not concerned about the very poor because they have safety nets to protect them. He says he's concerned about the middle class. Romney doesn't seem to realize how much of the middle class is becoming poor.

I accept the idea that there are different ways to address poverty. Conservatives believe that a rising economic tide lifts all boats. That may be true -- but first you've got to have a boat.

Sunday Roundup

Arianna Huffington | Posted 04.05.2012 | Politics

This week, America's poor, a group largely neglected by politicians, was front and center in the national conversation. On the one hand, we had President Obama speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast, invoking "the biblical call to care for... those at the margins of our society" and paraphrasing Luke in support of tax hikes on the wealthy (Question: Why would the Good Book have something relevant to say about taxes only now, but not when the president extended tax cuts for those "to whom much is given"?). On the same day as the Prayer Breakfast, Mitt Romney was accepting the endorsement of the gold-plated Donald Trump -- only one day after saying he was "not concerned about the very poor." Could you be more politically tone-deaf? They probably bonded over their mutual love of pink slips: Mitt: I like being able to fire people! Donald: I tried to trademark "You're fired!" Mitt: Glad you couldn't -- I would have owed you a lot of royalties!

"I'm not concerned about the very poor," is sure to dog Romney throughout the campaign. But as he continues to explain what he meant, I hope he takes the opportunity to think about the "very poor." And I hope he is concerned. We all should be.

I don't think Mitt Romney was saying he doesn't actually care about the "very poor." In fact, I believe he does care -- as do most reasonable people. But he clearly doesn't understand what "very poor" means, or how it relates to the middle class today.
