A friend told me the other day that she likes my blog but it's so sad she can't always read through. This took me back a bit, because while Caleb's is a sad situation, he is one of the funniest people I know. His therapist tells me humor is a sign of deep intelligence, and that Caleb couldn't be so funny if there wasn't a lot going on in his head. Let me share a few of my favorite Caleb stories.

Redbox, How I Yearn for Blockbuster

The source of my ire began on a recent Friday when I was charged with renting a movie suitable for 11-year-old viewing. Translation? Something void of gratuitous sex, nonstop profanity or Jason Statham. Monsters University fit the bill.

American movies suck. Make that mainstream American movies circa the summer of 2013... suck. Of course, there are exceptions. If you want to say that animated movies are doing pretty well right now, I can't really argue.

The Simplest Movie Of The Summer?

There are no world engines in Monsters University. There are no villains pretending to be someone with a much less interesting name in Monsters University. At no point in Monsters University does a daughter poison her mom, turning her mom into a bear. (I threw this Brave reference in here just to prove that it has nothing to do with Monsters University being animated.) Nope, it's just Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) going to college with the hopes that they will learn how to scare children. That's it. Thank God.

This film is strong enough to not rely on gimmicks. In terms of the story being slightly hackneyed, this is true. The ingenuity in this feature lies in the genuine hilarity, the insightful spotlight on broader themes and, once again, the animation itself.

Forget Harvey Weinstein (after all, Jennifer Lawrence did); the real kingmaker at the Academy Awards is John Goodman. The 60-year-old actor has become a regular at the Oscars over the last two years, this despite not being nominated himself. Goodman was a co-star in "The Artist," which won Best Picture last year, and "Argo," which won Best Picture this year. As Blackbook's Tyler Coates wrote earlier this week, Goodman is "the biggest ticket to getting an Oscar for Best Picture." That's good news for the five films Goodman is scheduled to appear in this year. Which John Goodman movie will win Best Picture in 2014?
