What I Want For Mother's Day Is Clarity

The Seattle Mariners have dumped Milton Bradley. Not a surprise. Despite being paid $12 million this season, he's batting .218. Which team will now hire him and proclaim, "He's a changed man"?

Let's face it. When things get tough, when something happens in life, when something goes awry, most teenagers I know still want mom.

For Mother's Day, my wish is to give my children the promise, at least, that I will do whatever I can to clean up the mess my generation has been partly responsible for making.

Nannies may seem like a luxury or an indulgence for the elite. But the fact is, for most working moms in this country, outsourcing excellent childcare is how we can go to work, pay the bills and breathe a little easier.

"Join the club," Karen replied. "Welcome to the world of working mothers. I can guarantee you -- all working moms feel the same push/pull that you're experiencing. And I'll be some fathers do, too."

If there's one thing I've learned after four kids and 18 years of parenting, it's this: as much as the mother shapes the child, the child shapes the mom.

Like most daughters, I complained about the ways my mother was flawed. And I grew up fighting my own flaws, especially as a mother, especially when my life got very hard.

I certainly don't suggest forgoing the flowers and brunch this Mother's Day. But maybe this year we can also present mom with some reassurance that she alone will not carry the burden of difficult end-of-life decisions.

Maybe it is the feminine impulse, the mother instinct, the maternal side in all of us that needs to become the more valued force?

I know others take comfort in visiting lost loved ones, but it doesn't really do much for me. I don't believe my mom is really there. My mom isn't anywhere.

Unlike many people I know, the truth of my relationship with my mother is that authentically, organically, uncommonly, she has always been my best friend.

I'm celebrating Mother's Day with my two daughters while discussing with them Peggy Drexler's powerful and moving book about the relationship between fathers and daughters (Our Fathers, Ourselves) and remembering my own mother who passed away eleven years ago but remains the foundation of my life -- her fearlessness, her sense of adventure, her ability to find joy in the most commonplace things still guiding me. "Don't miss the moment," she kept reminding me. Her unconditional loving was her greatest gift to me, and the greatest gift we can all give to our children. Happy Mother's Day, moms! And to all the fathers, we love you too -- especially after reading Peggy's book.
