There's probably a creative limit to what one can do with old shoes and snow, and we, the people, are not so foolish as to believe that we can compete with the big money special interests. But we must try.
Insulting someone in power is a legitimate form of non-violent resistance. The harm that could be inflicted by a shoe cannot be compared with harm inflicted by an unwarranted occupation that has resulted in the deaths and displacement of millions of Iraqis.
If our journalists in the Arab world were as good at investigating and writing stories as they were in shoe tossing, we would have perhaps uncovered a whole series of Abu Ghraibs or even more horrific stories.
President Bush, you are not only unpopular in the United States, but also in many other countries. How did you expect to be received in Iraq of all places? It's no surprise a reporter threw his shoe at you.
