Private prison reaches $1.3M settlement with EEOC

AP | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

DENVER — The operators of a Colorado private prison have agreed to pay $1.3 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that male officers forced female workers to perform sex acts to keep their jobs.

The federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced the settlement with the Dominion Correctional Services LLC and Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corporation of America on Tuesday.

The suit, filed by the EEOC in 2006, also alleged that women who worked at the Crowley County Correctional Facility were subjected to comments about their bodies and inappropriate touching. It accused the companies of retaliating against women who complained.

In one case, the EEOC alleged that a female officer who complained about being sexually harassed by a male co-worker was subsequently placed in an isolated location where she was raped by the man she complained about. A female officer also said the prison's former security chief forced her to have sex to keep her job.

The companies didn't admit liability as part of the settlement. CCA bought the prison from Dominion in 2003 and said most of the more serious allegations in the lawsuit dated from the time Dominion operated the prison.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Delta airliner headed to Atlanta from Seattle diverted to Nashville, Tenn., after a disturbance. No one was hurt.

Nashville International Airport spokeswoman Emily Richard says passenger Paul Marchuk III was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Delta spokesman Anthony Black in Atlanta said a passenger became unruly Tuesday afternoon and was removed by local police, but he had no further specifics. The Boeing 757 with 178 passengers and a six-person crew flew on to Atlanta where it landed some 1 1/2 hours late.

WSMV-TV in Nashville reported that a passenger had to be subdued by other passengers after he began quoting Bible passages. Richard said she had no information about that.

Ga. man in plane disturbance under evaluation

AP | JOE EDWARDS | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — An arrest report says a Georgia man caused a flight to make an unscheduled stop in Tennessee after he chanted Bible verses and kicked and flailed.

Authorities said Paul Marchuk III was under evaluation Wednesday in Tennessee a day after a Delta airliner headed to Atlanta from Seattle had to stop in Nashville. An arrest report says the 22-year-old began talking loudly and touching other passengers.

The report says the man from Canton, Ga., also wouldn't let a fellow passenger use the bathroom and told her that "his blood would be on her."

Six of the 178 passengers then helped a flight attendant subdue Marchuk about 15 minutes before the plane landed.

He has been charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Officials say he doesn't have an attorney.

Search on for Tenn. baby snatched by fake agent

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Tennessee mother says she needs her newborn son back after he was snatched from her home by a woman posing as an immigration agent.

Maria Gurrolla held a press conference Wednesday outside Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where she is being treated for stab wounds.

Gurrolla says through an interpreter that a woman she'd never seen before showed up at her door Tuesday claiming she was an immigration agent and was going to arrest her. She says the woman stabbed her with a knife taken from her kitchen, then took her baby.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says police are interviewing a person of interest near Buffalo, N.Y., but the baby is not with her.

Tennessee man accused of killing wife, her kin

AP | KRISTIN M. HALL | Posted 05.25.2011 | Home

A southern Tennessee man faces homicide charges in the slayings of his wife, her father, brother and teenage son, along with two other people in two states, authorities said Sunday.

The bodies of the relatives, along with a teenage neighbor, were found Saturday in two rural homes near Fayetteville in southern Tennessee, said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. A sixth body discovered at a business about 30 miles south in Huntsville, Ala., has not been identified, and authorities have not said how the killings are linked.

Jacob Shaffer, 30, of Fayetteville in Lincoln County, faces six counts of homicide, his motive described as domestic, according to TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm. She identified the victims as as Shaffer's wife, 38-year-old Traci Shaffer; her son, 16-year-old Devin Brooks; her brother, 34-year-old Chris Hall; her father, 57-year-old Billy Hall; and a neighbor, 16-year-old Robert Berber. Jacob Shaffer was being held in the Lincoln County jail without bond and no lawyer for him was listed at the jail.

Lincoln County Sheriff Murray Blackwelder said Saturday that his department was investigating three crime scenes and would not confirm the causes of death in what he called "horrendous" killings and "one of the worst crimes Lincoln County has seen." Autopsies were being performed Sunday.

Helm said the Tennessee victims were killed Friday night or early Saturday. Shaffer was sitting on the porch of one of the Fayetteville houses when authorities first arrived Saturday. Huntsville police said based on information from Shaffer, they found the sixth victim at Hall Cultured Marble Granite on Saturday morning.
