Donald Trump dragged Senator Ted Cruz into what is now (at least) the sixth "birther controversy" in history of presidential elections since the Civil War. Cruz, the son of a Cuban father and American mother, was born in Calgary, Canada in 1970.

The Bush v. Gore case damaged the credibility of the court and knocked down trust in the institution. Determining Cruz's eligibility early on, no matter how ridiculous or politically-motivated is the argument, saves us from another divisive campaign that eats at the trust and credibility of our institutions.

What it all boils down to is that Ted Cruz is free to run for president, as is just about anyone. Whether he can convince the country that he is eligible or not will likely be a matter of politics. It's open to anyone's interpretation who can and who cannot be president.
