As the world celebrates his 95th birthday this week, many countries and communities claim him as one of their own, including India and Indians, who have a long history and unique relationship with him.
Nelson Mandela, whose July 18th birthday is known and celebrated worldwide as Mandela Day, is hugely influential and inspirational to musicians, who've found it easy to wrap poetry and melodies around the leader's tragic and triumphant life since.
The rest of the world knows him as Nelson Mandela. We, as South Africans, choose to call him Madiba, his Xhosa clan name. Since I was a young girl growing up in the Daveyton township in Johannesburg's East Rand, Madiba has always been my hero.
