Everyone from New York knows the genre of restaurant known as a "diner." Diners have cheap food, they never close, they serve any meal at any time of day, and typically have as many items on the menu as the phone book -- back when we had phone books -- used to have names.
A few years back, I went to a nearby diner for some iced coffee and was turned down on a refill. Why is it coffee coming from the same pot can be bottomless yet tossing in a few ice cubes makes it not so?
