The odds are good that after Obama's health care address, at least two television networks will release results from "instant reaction" surveys. Odds are almost as good that pundits will misread those surveys.
Why bah humbug Obama's health care speech? Because it went almost exactly as predicted. Great rhetorical flourishes, but did anyone hear him say that he was definitely going to fight for the public option? No.
I understand why Obama hasn't taken a more aggressive approach until now. But he doesn't have to actually get angry. All he has to do is level with us and propose a clear, detailed way out of this mess.
This is Obama's true test. His biggest flaws as president so far have all come down to his hesitation to fight the narrow, entrenched industry groups serving their bottom line at the expense of the people.
