For all Monday's talk of power, and successfully ending the "war on terror" in Afghanistan, the significance was less the obvious signals of being "muscular" than of an attempt to be flexible and, yes, multilateralist.

In fact, it's a hopeful sign that Obama will likely choose a generalist -- Richardson or Biden -- and not a general, and, if a woman, not the one who called him "irresponsible" and "naïve" and set up the GOP for the general election.
This month, Obama is shoring up his world leadership credentials. In traveling to Europe and the Middle East, writing about Iraq, addressing nuclear weapons and speaking on national security, he is saying: "Yes I can."
