The oil industry is continuing to turn up the political heat on lawmakers reluctant to cut taxes on North Slope production even as Gov. Sean Parnell's proposed tax restructuring appears to be put off until next year.
What really screws the economy is not high oil prices, it's the yo-yoing of prices. A gas tax, phased in over several years, would gradually increase prices at the pump to make alternatives relatively more affordable.
By blocking any new revenue streams to fund higher education, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Senate Republican minority are not only taxing California's young people and their families, they are crippling the state's future.
