Operation Protective Edge

Erecting a Giant Prison for All Israelis

Alon Ben-Meir | Posted 02.11.2016 | World
Alon Ben-Meir

I wonder what the founders of Israel, who were dreaming of a just, moral, progressive, and compassionate Jewish state, would say had they been able to witness the moral decadence of a so-called leader who is shattering their noble dream and putting Israel's very existence at risk.

Questions We Need to Ask About Israel's War in Gaza

Zeina Azzam | Posted 07.22.2016 | Politics

How can the international community allow Israel to continue to invade Gaza, over and over again, and inflict such massive pain and devastation on the Palestinians with total impunity? Is there any moral basis left to Israel's prosecution of this uneven "war" and to the international community's inaction?

Three years ago, the United Nations issued a report predicting that the Gaza Strip would be uninhabitable by 2020. Thanks to Israel's recent attack, this warning appears to have arrived sooner than expected.

Leave it to Netanyahu, however, to use the Gaza experience to justify the continuation of the occupation rather than working out airtight plans with the PA that would entail security measures to ensure that the West Bank does not become a staging ground for attacks on Israel.

Who's to Blame ... in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict?

Andrew Luisi | Posted 12.12.2014 | World
Andrew Luisi

Rather than blaming each other, we ought to accept responsibility for each other's fate. All of us as human beings are inextricably intertwined. Instead of blame, let's try a new game: act for peace, and encourage those on the ground in both Israel and Palestine who are doing so.

What Being 'Pro-Israel' Should Mean

This label insinuates that their primary concern is reaching the best outcome for the state of Israel. The irony is that sometimes the most so-called "Pro-Israel" people are those who are advocating for policies that hurt Israel.

Amid a shaky and uncertain ceasefire with Hamas, Israelis did not celebrate in the streets as Hamas and the people in the Gaza Strip did with fireworks and rifles shot in the air.

The Gaza Health Crisis: Who Is at Fault?

By continuing to operate in and nearby health care infrastructure, Hamas has made a calculated decision that its own civilians' lives are less important than the condemnation Israel receives from damaging a health care facility, either intentionally or incidentally.

Why It's Hard to Believe Israel's Claim That It Did Its Best to Minimize Civilian Deaths

Idan Barir | Posted 10.12.2014 | World
Idan Barir

I write this with great sorrow for civilians hurt on both sides. Sorrow for our soldiers who have fallen in this operation, and sorrow for the future of my country and the entire region. I know that as I write, soldiers like me have fired shells into Gaza. They had no way of knowing who or what they would hit. Faced with so many innocent casualties, it is time for us to state very clearly: this use of artillery fire is a deadly game of Russian roulette. The statistics, on which such firepower relies, mean that in densely populated areas such as Gaza, civilians will inevitably be hit as well. The IDF knows this, and as long as it continues to use such weaponry, it will be hard to believe when it claims to be minimizing civilian deaths. As a former soldier and an Israeli citizen, I feel compelled to ask today: have we not crossed a line?

The besieged Jews of the Warsaw ghetto had a motto "to live and die in dignity." As I sit in my own besieged ghetto, I think how Palestinians have honored this universal value. We live in dignity and we die in dignity, refusing to accept subjugation.
