Like it or not, actors have a responsibility beyond ourselves. There are still too many young gay people growing up surrounded by hatred, and they need to see well-adjusted, successful gay people who thrive without fear. And there are too many ignorant bigots who also need to see us in all our diversity. Once they do, then maybe we really can do away with labels.

I worry that I might only play gay characters for the rest of my career, or that I will be forever marked by something I can't control. But ultimately, I realized that being honest about who I am and living my life authentically and with integrity is more important to me than anything else.

An incredible amount has changed in terms of the playing field for openly LGBT actors in the days since the campaign started. In April 2011 things were looking pretty bleak: we had yet to see someone huge come out, someone who could carry a film, a bona fide movie star.
