While many Palestinians and their supporters want the US to press Israel to adhere to international law and end its occupation, many would be happy if the US just stops protecting Israel in international forums, especially the UN Security Council.
If the Arabs didn't call themselves Palestinians until the Zionist movement began, neither did the Jews call themselves Israelis until 1948. Until then, they were just Jews. But each of the two peoples knew who they were and who the other was.
As Gabriela Shalev reminds us, it's foolish to assume that Obama is merely a puppet with Netanyahu pulling the strings. Her two years at the UN surely taught her that the real power is in Washington, not Jerusalem.
Here we are, two and one half years into the Obama administration's efforts to resolve this matter, and the only creative ideas have come from the Palestinians, the weakest and most vulnerable party to the conflict.
