So, I eat crow on this one. I've been trumpeting the digital revolution for readers for years. But I miss my tattered pages, my rumpled book covers, my heavy backpack, my cherished, cherished book covers.
On World Read Aloud Day, I honor the many authors who write for children, for their tender care of the precious lives and understandings of children. Of their fears, hopes and dreams. Of using language to say, beloved child, you are never alone.
Boys are different when it comes to reading. Yes, some boys devour books from day one, and some girls never find the joy. But, overall, high school boys have fallen nearly 20 points behind their female peers.
