"I'm crying because you are yelling at me!" said Liam when I told him to stop. "I'm yelling at you because you are crying," I said. Which not only underlined the absurdity of the situation, but made me feel so proud of my parenting and my ability to manage myself and a 9-year-old. Sigh.
Do religious teachings set up impossibly high standards that increase parental guilt? Or does the idea that God stands with them in times of both joy and anxiety reduce stress and lead to increased parental satisfaction?
I believe there are steps to getting off the rat wheel of parental stress, but we all have to join together and stop trying to out perform each other. Rest. Relax. Take a Deep Breath. The world is still spinning. The sun is probably going to come up tomorrow. And everything is going to be OK.
