The fact that Romney did not go for the safe choice in a vice-presidential selection is a token of his lack of confidence. He knows he cannot win based solely on his own appeal. The choice of Paul Ryan is a sign of weakness not of strength.

The unpopular Ryan budget -- which passed with large majorities in the Republican-held house both times it's been offered up -- gives Democrats a readymade bogeyman to launch spitballs at from now until November 6.

Interestingly, the match-up between Obama/Biden vs. Romney/Ryan offers a good illustration of the tension within the church. Both the current vice president and the recent addition to the Republican ticket are Catholics.

Romney's choice of Paul Ryan for Vice President gives him the clearly articulated agenda his campaign has lacked to date. But, in the long term, the GOP has to change if it wants to remain competitive for the White House.

Even leaving the 2009 job losses out of the calculation, jobs were created under Clinton's policies at a rate nearly eight times faster than they were during the second Bush's business- and high-income-friendly policies -- precisely the policies of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

As any psychologist could tell you, if you're obsessed with escaping someone, you are not free of that someone. In fleeing Sarah Palin, anxiously looking over his shoulder, Mitt Romney has run around in a circle, smack into Paul Ryan.

If there's one thing Paul Ryan likes, as laid out in his famous "Path to Prosperity" budget, it's weapons spending -- and the budget spells out exactly where he's going to find the money to buy more guns every year forever: He's going to crack down hard on rich tax cheats who game the system.

Embracing Paul Ryan's vision now is not only a gamble for Mitt Romney, whose flip-flop from Massachusetts moderate to severe conservative would give our Olympic gymnasts a run for their gold medals, but an unacceptable risk for millions of American families who need the benefits they've earned.

On Paul Ryan

The New Yorker's Ryan Lizza provides a profile of Rep. Paul Ryan, with a rich discussion of his vision for limited government. It's a good read, but it left me thinking about what it is that troubles me most about Rep. Ryan, an earnest guy who's come a long way and influenced a lot of people at a relatively young age. The problem is his numbers don't add up. And that's a particularly big problem for a celebrated budget wonk. It's actually not hard to write down plans that purport to quantify Ayn Randian visions. But we should beware of politicians pumped up on ideological visions stoked by novelists and fairy tales about how slashing taxes and spending sets us free. The world is more complicated than that.
