Is that why I see fewer robins and towhees in my backyard than in recent years but more and more House finches and crows? Again, a simple 1 + 1 does not always lead to 2 and so I can't reasonably draw such a conclusion.

A great deal of that hands-on rehab is performed by hundreds of dedicated volunteers, my wife Carolyn among them. With the urging then of my very special volunteer and following plans provided by our professional wildlife staff, we've constructed a spacious enclosure in our backyard.

The Gorilla, the Boy, and the Question: Why Do We Need Zoos?

The killing of the gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo has received the attention one could only expect. I don't care to join in the bashing and blaming, but I do think this is the right time to ask a far more basic question. Why do we need zoos?

I've written before of the birds in my suburban yard. We've spotted dozens of species on our postage stamp size property, from diminutive Anna's Hummingbird to the impressive Cooper's Hawk who lands frequently on our fence.

Yes, there is something very wrong at the core of many people but there is also something very right with those who give of themselves so freely, so generously, and without any agenda other than the clear desire to help save the lives of animals who cannot help themselves.

Who Is Helping the Animals Near You? Likely Not the ASPCA

As the saying goes, it's déjà vu all over again. This weekend I received two letters from the New York City-based ASPCA. The letters were identical, although they came with different envelope stuffers. Why does this seem familiar?

Clucking Not True

Last Monday's San Francisco Chronicle front page reported a now oft-asserted but completely Bizarro world assertion that California's Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act (2008's Proposition 2 which was passed by the voters and is now law) has made the world a nice place for farmed chickens. Come on.

How extraordinary that major airlines are now setting their own policies prohibiting their transporting decapitated heads of lions and other wildlife "trophies." Good on them! Perhaps now it's time to see eBay step up with a comparable policy.

In the Shadow of Cecil the Lion's Death, Do Something to Help Animals

The death of Cecil the lion has appropriately generated tremendous outrage. Good. But outrage only goes so far. Beyond that emotional response, there are many things you can do -- both large and small -- to help animals.

I won't and I don't criticize the work done by these national organizations. You should take the time to form your own opinions about the programs and services of any charitable organization you are thinking about supporting. What I do take exception to is those organizations making statements about their work designed to lead to questionable conclusions.

People & Other Animals: When Is the Right Time to End the Life of Loved Animal?

Ken White | Posted 06.22.2015 | San Francisco
Ken White

Those of us who work in animal welfare are frequently asked to answer a question that has no answer: When is the right time to end the life of a loved animal? A lousy question, but I guess it's just part of the job.

I have a three-inch scar on my right forearm from when a caiman (a horribly ignored exotic "pet" I was involved in rescuing) tried to separate that part of my limb from the rest of my body. The scar is now decades old but the memory is fresh.

We take our work home with us. Perhaps no field of work better illustrates that saying than animal welfare. Those of us who work at humane organizations, almost all of us, share our homes with more animals than anyone outside the field would think sane.
