On July 1, hard work and hundreds of hours spent by volunteers had paid off. Hawaii became the first state banning single-use plastic bags at store checkouts. People will eventually accept the ban and find their alternatives purchasing reusable cotton bags and bringing them to stores.
We all have different tools in out tool boxes that we can use to fight the power of corporations that place short-term profit over the long-term health and well-being of people and the planet. The time is NOW to use all that we have to stop plastic pollution.
Politicizing the environment makes for bad government and pandering to a special interest constituency is no justification for trading the benefit and betterment of our environment for the privilege and profit of a select few.
Judging from the speeches made by California Senators Alex Padilla, Kevin de Leon, and Ricardo Lara at a press conference in Vernon on Friday, January 24th, statewide plastic bag legislation may well be "in the bag."
