Practically every kind of animal, from plankton to whales, is now contaminated by plastic. It's in the birds, in the turtles, in the fish. At the current rate, we could have 1 ton of plastics for every 3 tons of fish by 2025.
Today plastics comprise about 50 percent of the volume of a new passenger vehicle, but only 10 percent of the weight. That of course is a major reason for the shift to plastics -- reducing weight and hence increasing mileage.
With each potential discovery our hopes were raised only for the authorities and the media to casually inform us the debris or oil slicks were not from a plane but sea trash and oil slicks. The media's nonchalance and our societal indifference is hardly surprising but astoundingly scary.
