Excessive force puts white lives at risk, as well as those of blacks and Hispanics. But the silence of the white community and of the white church is deafening. We need people of conscience in the white community to join with the growing movement grounded in the African-American community to demand reform.
Freddie Gray's death is a tragedy, and unfortunately a tragedy that is being repeated in low-income communities across the country. But maybe it will force us to face up to our mistakes and embrace common-sense, large-scale solutions to support more children, young people and their families to succeed.
For the last quarter of a century, NAN and I have advocated on behalf of many victims of racial violence at the hands of police. But in all those years, I've never seen a situation that will force a national election to deal with policing as I do now. Translation: GOP candidates will actually have to deal with policing as an issue.
