The difference between today's political structure and the aspirations of Americans is a vision of alternate universes. One is the status quo of the political, media, and establishment elite. The other universe is that of the American people.
Americans have good reason to be disgusted with politics in Washington. Both major political party organizations shamelessly pursue policies designed to generate the most money and power for the party in the short term.
The levels of inequality, injustice, unintended results, hypocrisy, and brutality that our children witness on a daily basis contributes to a sense of hopelessness and fatalism that I believe is both justified and heartbreaking.
I recently watched the movie Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman. I actually thought, "Wouldn't it be sweet to have a president who can speak Tootsie-style?" She fearlessly ripped open the curtain to reveal the dysfunction all around her/him. It woke everyone up in a painful, yet positive way.
Given the state of our economy today, we may not have the luxury of a moonshot like the GI Bill or the invention of the Internet to restore Americans' faith in opportunity. But we must do something, because our young people are internalizing the melancholy as the new normal.
