The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals just declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional. Yes, this is a positive step. But these steps have been stomping all over members of the LGBT community for years, and most of us are tired of it.
Today's Prop 8 ruling draws nearer the day when every American will be able to marry the person they love, regardless of gender -- and to have that important commitment recognized by the law of the land. Having that commitment honored is no small thing.
Never before has a federal court of appeals declared that gay marriage is protected by the U.S. Constitution. Today's decision has the potential to benefit not only thousands of gay Californians but could establish the foundation for extension of marriage equality to all Americans.
Despite the angry protests of many anti-gay Christian groups, I believe that Judge Walker's ruling is actually rooted in a profound theological truth articulated by St. Paul in Romans 13: "the one who loves another has fulfilled the law."
