On Earth Day, April 22, 2013, I disrupted construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline and was arrested and charged with several offenses in Atoka County, Oklahoma. 18 months later I finally had my day in court before a jury of my peers.
The appropriate course of action is for Sterling and the NBA to reach a settlement whereby Sterling agrees to put the team in the hands of a to-be-formed public trust. And, yes, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar should be in charge.
An elected official, or any leader, whether of families, small teams or large organizations, has signed up for more than just being an effective manager. We have to believe in them based on our experience of them, not on what they say to us.
The sinking of public trust is integral to our faith in complex social and technical systems that undergird everyday life, our confidence in each other, and ultimately our belief that we can build a better future together.
As history shows, any small, short-term budgetary gains from work force cutbacks are likely to be offset by serious regulatory missteps, more after-the-fact finger-pointing and a continuation of the cycle of failure and mistrust.
