My eldest daughter, Kit, made a movie trailer starring herself and Petey. It's a wonderful tribute to a wonderful dog. And she's a wonderful kid for doing it. Some days, when I miss that black-and-white face, I watch it. It makes me weep every time, but it also fills me with so much love.
Freddie's initial worries that I would not be able to take care of Comet proved somewhat ironic: As my health deteriorated, I eventually trained Comet to become my service dog. She not only took care of me, she ended up saving my life.
I started to think about the relationship between the gay community and rescue animals. Personally, keeping my gay identity secret for 18 years made me more empathic to the "underdogs" of society -- and there is no more heroic underdog than the shelter pet.
