Why pay to be entertained when you can stir up trouble for the cost of broadband? Being mean is sometimes a byproduct of good old-fashioned boredom. By and large I have found that bored human beings are very dangerous creatures.
It's not easy driving in traffic with people cutting you off, traffic backing up, and people disobeying the traffic rules. It's easy to get angry. But the reality is that you are driving a 4,000-pound vehicle at 65 miles per hour with almost no room for error.
The idea of driverless cars may seem like a sci-fi fantasy now, but they are already being tested and driven. And they work, so it's already a matter of time before they begin appearing on our roads. But what about road rage?
I have variations on my recovery strategy. I've been known to flip someone off and then run my middle finger through my hair as if it were a comb for the Fonz. Or I pretend that I'm keeping the beat to a song by drumming with my middle fingers on the steering wheel.
Maybe we can practice this way of reframing an experience you are having on the road so that your own state of mind might become a little more spacious, a little less jammed. It might not get us to our destinations faster than the next guy, but it's got to improve our "car-ma."
