Students have every right to object to the day they worked for being used to conduct ideological warfare. They have every right to add silly accessories to their caps or subtract underthings from their gowns rather than gird themselves for rebuttal.
Intellectual growth necessitates becoming exposed to differing ideas and world views -- even if they threaten our core values and beliefs. To do less is to relinquish academic freedom in favor of social conformity.
The Beatles wrote "Revolution" in 1968. Yet, it remains the dialogue of our time. In fact, that dialogue has never been as apposite as it was in recent days as college students at U.C. Berkeley collided with campus police.
