In the first week of January, Florida joined 35 other states in legalizing same-sex marriage. This has been met with a celebration by many couples who have now finally experienced their marriage ceremonies after years of waiting. Another thing happened that day -- same-sex spouses in Florida filed for divorce.
The recent rulings by the United States Supreme Court on same-sex marriage have generated a fair amount of comment, by lawyers, gay activists, and social commentators. Ironic as it may seem, some of the greatest impact of these decisions will emerge in the parallel universe of marriage, i.e. divorce.
While my own anecdotal experience is that gay relationships are very stable, it's inevitable that some gay couples will be unhappy and will want to divorce. As that occurs, gays will need to have access to the same legal support that straight couples have had and will need equal consideration in court.
