On Thursday, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that the Pentagon will open all military combat roles to women. Finally, women are eligible to do any job a man can do in the military. Young girls, their mothers and Women's Rights advocates cheered.
Any future decision to go to war must at least consider invocation of the draft, and that discussion will be fundamentally changed by considering unwillingly sending not just our sons but our daughters into harm's way.
Let a jury hear a man speak from his conscience, let them recognize the risk he's taken to speak to them and let that jury compare his words and actions to a government that will insist he's nothing more than a common criminal.
If we aren't going to have a draft in any imaginable future, and if we aren't even going to enforce the Selective Service registration law -- the last prosecution took place in 1986 -- then it is time to get rid of draft registration.
