As I am often speaking with students about the concept of "learning service" and encouraging them to prioritize global "learning" and development education prior to jumping straight into international "service," I often get the question, "Where should I study abroad?"
What did that decision-making process look like? "Hmmm, well my dog is a FEMALE and I think she is so PRETTY so I'm going to name her either 'she' or 'beautiful' in another language and I will love it until the Apocalypse.
Suddenly, I was thrown into a wall as the ship took a sharp turn. Then, I heard the words I will never forget: "We have been informed that there is political unrest in Cairo and we will be heading to Avir, Israel."
That mix of nervous anticipation and unbridled excitement reminded me of freshman orientation, but for the hundreds of students aboard the MV Explorer this semester, they are experiencing a cultural baptism by sea.
