Since primitive times, humans have relied on relationships to survive. If a man or woman was accepted into a tribe, then he or she had a greater chance of living to see another day. The person who was cast out would most likely not have survived the primitive world on his own.
So much of our identity is enshrined in our community, so is it any wonder that when we subvert our "true" identity simply to satisfy our thirst for belonging, we sabotage any hope of actual connection?
Remember that the more you lean out, the more you tweet and seek and stretch to find another like you, there is a very deserving beautiful creature waiting and calling for your friendship too, and that creature is you.
