Did Jennifer Lawrence Host The Worst 'SNL' Of The Season?

Mike Ryan | Posted 03.22.2013 | TV
Mike Ryan

Saturday night's Jennifer Lawrence-hosted edition of SNL was... not good.

'SNL' Scorecard: Samuel L. Jackson Calls 'Bullshit' On Martin Short's Show

Mike Ryan | Posted 12.16.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

"SNL" had the difficult task of airing one day after one of the worst mass shootings in the US history. It was never specifically mentioned, but it presided over the night after a haunting children's choir rendition of "Silent Night."

'SNL' Scorecard: Jamie Foxx Upstaged By Dermot Mulroney, Somehow

Mike Ryan | Posted 12.09.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

It's hard to build momentum without a major news story or scandal this week, this felt like a show with no purpose and no momentum. This wasn't Foxx's fault, who, with a sketch comedy background, is certainly a talented enough host.

'SNL' Scorecard: Louis C.K. Was, For Better Or Worse, Louis C.K.

Mike Ryan | Posted 11.04.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Louis C.K. has developed the reputation that he's only happy when he's in charge and on last night's show, at times, that seemed evident. When he was comfortable, he was electric. When he wasn't comfortable, he broke character.

'SNL' Scorecard: Bruno Mars Channels His Inner Justin Timberlake

Mike Ryan | Posted 10.21.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Musical performers who are thrust into hosting duties have a, let's say, mixed history of success on "SNL." But, yeah ... maybe Bruno Mars (with a little help from Tom Hanks) really is the next Justin Timberlake.

'SNL' Scorecard: Christina Applegate Should Host More Often

Mike Ryan | Posted 10.14.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Christina Applegate was a terrific host because she blended into the cast and when that happens, "SNL" becomes a streamlined machine -- which it was last night. I'm already looking forward to when Applegate hosts again in 2031.

How Did Daniel Craig Do On 'Saturday Night Live'?

Mike Ryan | Posted 12.07.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

As host of Saturday Night Live, Daniel Craig seemed raring to go -- he was practically screaming, "I want to prove to you that I am funny! No, really, I am!" Unfortunately, for the most part, the material just wasn't there.

'SNL' Scorecard: Pedrad And Pharoah Shine On Final 'Weekend Update Thursday'

Mike Ryan | Posted 11.27.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

In 2008, these specials brought out guests like Bill Murray and Will Ferrell. In other words: It truly felt like an event. This year? It really felt no different than anything that aired on the Saturday night show.

'SNL Scorecard': Joesph Gordon-Levitt Takes It All Off

Mike Ryan | Posted 09.23.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Joseph Gordon-Levitt did an admirable job with what he was given, but it's painfully obvious that the Thursday night primetime special took a lot of the political punch out of the show -- a political punch that was sorely needed.

'SNL' Scorecard: Seth MacFarlane Really Likes To Do His 'Family Guy' Voices

Mike Ryan | Posted 11.16.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Seth MacFarlane hosted the first "SNL" since 2010 to feature new cast members at the start of the season -- Aidy Bryant, Tim Robinson and Cecily Strong (Kate McKinnon joined the cast late last season) -- and he was ... fairly excellent. The last time "SNL" premiered after the Olympics we were unfortunate enough to get Michael Phelps as host.

'SNL' Scorecard: Mick Jagger's Fine Farewell To Kristen Wiig

Mike Ryan | Posted 05.20.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

This was Kristen Wiig's night. Of the three cast members rumored to be leaving "Saturday Night Live," I think we can go ahead and remove the word "rumored" off of Wiig and Samberg, who said his goodbye with "Lazy Sunday 2."

'SNL' Scorecard: Eli Manning Still Has Younger Brother Issues

Mike Ryan | Posted 07.06.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Eli Manning wasn't as good as Peyton, but he certainly wasn't terrible. Let's go with the word "serviceable" for Manning -- a word that's a bit too strong when describing the overall quality of this week's show.

'SNL' Scorecard: One Of The Best Shows Of The Season

Mike Ryan | Posted 06.15.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Josh Brolin seemed to be a bit of an afterthought. For whatever reason, Brolin stepped out of the way and let the cast shine -- which resulted in one of the best shows of the season.

'SNL' Scorecard: Sofia Vergara Wins The Battle Of Expectations

Mike Ryan | Posted 06.08.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Sofia Vergara sure does like to yell. And she's quite talented at doing so. She was better than expected, if, for no other reason, the show put her in easy situations.

'SNL' Scorecard: Jonah Hill Proves Mediocre

Mike Ryan | Posted 05.11.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

"SNL" is off for the next three weeks ... and there did seem to be a vibe in the air that the cast couldn't wait for their vacation to begin. There was not even one must-see sketch.

'SNL' Scorecard: Lindsay Lohan Fails To Live Up To The Hype

Mike Ryan | Posted 05.04.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Jon Hamm showed up as the emergency host, which only made me really wish that Jon Hamm was actually hosting. Also, explain to me again why Jon Hamm didn't host this week?

SNL Scorecard: Is Maya Rudolph Linsane?

Mike Ryan | Posted 04.20.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

So, the talk this week centered on the question of "will she or won't she" in relation to Maya Rudolph's Whitney Houston impression -- and thankfull...

'SNL' Scorecard: Zooey Deschanel Brings the Quirk

Mike Ryan | Posted 04.13.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Zooey Deschanel's efforts as the host of were quite great. But when a news story as big as Whitney Houston's death breaks mere hours before the live show, it puts "SNL" in the weird position of being a "topical" live show, but not really.

SNL Scorecard: Channing Tatum's Shirtless Night

Mike Ryan | Posted 04.06.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

"SNL" decided to really focus on Tatum's beefcake status. Put it this way: I saw Channing Tatum with his shirt off not one, not two, but three times. We get it: Channing Tatum is a good-looking guy.

'SNL' Scorecard: Not Even Harry Potter Could Save Daniel Radcliffe’s Show

Mike Ryan | Posted 03.16.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

'SNL' Scorecard: Charles Barkley's Mediocre Night

Mike Ryan | Posted 03.09.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

This was Charles Barkley's third time as host. He's had his memorable moments - like his Jay Mohr written 1993 monologue in which he plays basketball against Barney the dinosaur - and I'm sure that he's fun to be around, but, like most athletes, leaves something to be desired as a host. Last night was no different (But he is a lot better than most.)

‘SNL’ Scorecard: Jimmy Fallon And The Assault On Tim Tebow

Mike Ryan | Posted 02.16.2012 | TV
Mike Ryan

Last night's SNL wasn't listed as an official reunion show of the 2002-2003 season, but, yeah, that was a reunion show.

'SNL' Scorecard: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly | Posted 11.20.2011 | Comedy

There's a danger in looking too forward to an individual 'SNL' host just because, on paper, they should excel. Too often I've thought, "Well, this per...
