As New York hunkers down and prepares for a massive snow storm, my mind wanders back to 1988. I was in the fifth grade, and my entrepreneurial juices were flowing when my town in Maryland got hit with our first snow storm of the year.
After all the status updates come the pictures. Kids in the snow, dogs in the snow, Grandma in the snow, rulers on the deck in the snow and, of course, just snow with the caption "beautiful," or "It's really coming down now."
Does Northern Europe exist in snow? The travel industry says no. Ski areas aside, most tours and cruises adventure to Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands in June and July, when the days are stretched out and soft, like fondue that's been melted in a pot.
