There will be some who cannot or will not allow themselves to move beyond demeaning labels or acts of hate. You can only be responsible for yourself and your willingness to step above and beyond a diminished way of living. You can be part of re-framing how we think, talk and act as members of a shared country and a common humanity.
Over the last few weeks, there has been near unanimous agreement among liberal and mainstream commentators that the Confederate flag represents "hate, not heritage." The flag's current presence in American culture is ubiquitous. It adorns license plates, bumper stickers, mugs, bodies (via tattoos), and even baby diapers.
Dear South Carolina, it's been six years since I left, and I still miss you dearly. But I don't miss everything. There was a time, growing up, when I thought I understood the scope of racism in the South. I did not. Your culture is not sporadically punctuated with racism. The two are intricately intertwined.
