Splash isn't the first time-honored gay bar in New York to close this year. In March, Rawhide, also in Chelsea, closed after 34 years. While bars come and go, Splash's closing further signifies Chelsea's gentrification, the gay community's move to Hell's Kitchen, and changes in gay culture.

When Splash does close this month, I won't necessarily miss it (though I did have some remarkable times there). What I will miss is the New York City that it was a part of, a place where the fringes of our culture could come together and celebrate.
