Rape may very well be as brutal of a crime as murder, however victims of homicide do not get the opportunity to live to tell the story of the terror they experienced.
One spring day, 21 years after Liz's assault, she received a letter in her mailbox from her rapist. He was making amends as part of a 12-step program for alcoholism, and he was asking her for forgiveness.
As I read that poem, I realized that up to this point, considering myself a rape survivor was almost laughable. I hadn't been thinking like a survivor but like a victim.
