I am proud that the New York City Council has crated the Respect for All (RFA) program in our public schools. RFA creates safe spaces for students by giving them a forum to celebrate their identity and diversity regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.
I will not stand by and see other families destroyed. We must defeat bullying. Parents, teachers, grandparents, and -- most of all -- kids, must band together and stop this epidemic in our schools and on our playgrounds.
Bullying, some would argue, is also a tradition. It's been happening for generations, and is often even passed down within families. The weapons change through the years, but the victims tend to remain constant, kids who are different.
When the news reports another innocent child driven to take their own life because of homophobia and bullying, I wonder if that kid is one of the many who have written to me. And more than that, I wonder if it is "my kid."
