We often boast of the uniqueness of our system. We are not a totalitarian society that crushes the individual out of existence and tramples over his/her rights and freedoms. But there are questions we need to ask ourselves.
A couple of days ago I was in a deeply melancholic state because of various personal struggles, including health and financial issues and an ex-wife I still love, but it all is leavened with the sense that as one approaches the end of life, the world becomes a much more apocalyptical place.
Reading the eulogies written in the last 24 hours, one wonders if the full measure of her legacy is really understood. Her strength was forged in her ability to wisely marry her pragmatism with her strong principles of freedom and democracy.
