Quincy Jones received the Herbie Hancock Humanitarian award from Herbie Hancock himself at the Thelonious Monk Institute's International Jazz Vocals Competitions Award Gala at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood last Sunday night.
"I managed to pull it off, but there are thousands of other people that haven't, and that's the tragedy. You try to follow a dream and it gradually pales and then you wake up and the rent is due and you don't have the funds to pay it."
Is it called "Organ Monk" because the guy at the Hammond C3 is wearing a monk's habit? Or because the band presented a program of all Thelonius Monk tunes at the JJA Awards at the Blue Note? It's a little of both.
"If there's any way to sort of distilling Once: The Musical into anything, it would have to be the presence of hope -- the idea that if you remain open, you can enter into these beautiful relationships and friendships."
Chick Corea's new album, Forever, is a two-disc set, with the first disc being acoustic, and the second disc with a full band and guests. For the first disc, I asked him if it was a return to Return To Forever.
