The way stores get us to spend is by offering sales under the cloak of making us think we are giving something meaningful and saving money so we can buy even more. At the same time, there are 16 million kids in the U.S. that will not be worrying about what gifts are being bought for them, but how they will get their next meal.

You can say I've moved beyond slacktivism and more into activism, but without getting involved originally as a slacktivist, I never would've take the first step to becoming more of an activist.

We learned that if we saw an X with a square around it, we should not enter. It's unsafe. If your job is to help search for others and you get hurt and can no longer search, how much help would you be? It's taken me years to realize this lesson applies to how we take care of ourselves in our own lives.

When I start asking myself, "What do I want people to take away from this?" That's when everything falls apart. Frustration takes over because I could drive myself nuts thinking of how to phrase my words perfectly so that the majority of people will walk away with the information I want them to.

As that realization entered my head, I began to understand that I had three choices. The first, reason I was in the rafters, was already ruled out. The other two were: I could get down and live my life the way it had been, or I could decide to change things about my life.

I fail to see why a "number" could frighten the heck out of anyone spry enough to blow out a candle and eat a piece of cake. Most likely, someone placed it in front of you, which means you have caring folks around you wanting to celebrate your life. Many people do not have that.
