Reinventing yourself is not complicated, but it's not easy. It takes work and the work never goes away, it just comes more naturally the longer you do it. Be prepared for the journey, and remember to celebrate the small victories, have patience to let things happen, but never be afraid to take action, and don't ever think you have all the answers.
The way stores get us to spend is by offering sales under the cloak of making us think we are giving something meaningful and saving money so we can buy even more. At the same time, there are 16 million kids in the U.S. that will not be worrying about what gifts are being bought for them, but how they will get their next meal.
I attended my first SXSWeco, a gathering of a global community to explore, engage and co-create solutions for a sustainable world, this year. As I think back on the experience, it was a mix of unexpected events and people, which provided me with several takeaways that can teach us all some important lessons.
We learned that if we saw an X with a square around it, we should not enter. It's unsafe. If your job is to help search for others and you get hurt and can no longer search, how much help would you be? It's taken me years to realize this lesson applies to how we take care of ourselves in our own lives.
