If you don't get much sun exposure and don't consume vitamin D from fortified foods, such as dairy foods, you may be deficient. Taking 400 to 1,000 IU is very safe. Otherwise, don't overdo a good thing.

The Daily Recommend Intakes do not take into account a person's unique medical history, genetics, dietary intake, clinical symptomatology, environmental conditions including sunlight exposure or biochemical and nutritional assessment.
