Many Sanford residents are frustrated, angry and deeply saddened over the verdict, and these emotions are connected to long-festering issues in the community. Such feelings cannot be swept aside. There must be room for people to express their views and for others to hear and feel them.
As of now, "stand your ground" laws are a matter of state law only, but could in time provide the means to implement a right nationwide if self-defense were ultimately to emerge as a guaranteed right under the Constitution.
Movies routinely portray the American black experience as poor, violent and terrifying. When black men appear in the news, the stories are almost completely restricted to sports or crime coverage. Our society views young black men as inevitable criminals.
